QUESTION: 1.78:1 vs. 2.39:1 …what do you like?

15 May

this my latest project i shot and edited / color graded…

here is the thing well i can’t decide what version works better…the normal 16:9 / 1.78:1

or the 2.39:1 version…

let me know what u think:

16:9 / 1.78:1

————

2.39:1

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback here, on twitter, facebook, LiftGammaGain Forum … seems like the 2.39:1 version is the winner … even the basketball girls like it more … ;)

In this case, I like the 2.39:1 aspect ratio better. It seems to highlight the horizontal action of the game better.

2.39 fits your story better imho!

    Hey,

Very iinteresting comparison. Very often I m wondering which aspect is better for my own project so thanx a lot for sharing your both versions. In your case I think they re both working very fine in their ownn format, but like every others I will always prefer the 2,39 :1. The wide shots are much better …

Did you reframe some shots in the wide version or is it exactly the same as your 1,79 : 1 ?

    Cheers,

    FX,
    Paris,

PS : by the way thanx for your blog

      Thanks!

Well i think some shots work better in the “normal” 16:9 version but the overall look kinda is better in 2.39:1 mode.
i did reframe some shot to fit better in the wider version but i did not match them … it really just was so they work better in “cinemascope” ;)

      cheers
      M.

I have to agree with Todd. They both look great though. Good work!
