RED EPIC @cinec Munich 2010

20 Sep

well today i have a gear only post… well i did use FCP to make this lil clip … so there you go:
it was cinec time in Munich and after i missed IBC this year and i’m not able to go to photokina that was my only chance to see at least a few fancy “toys” in action. but i did not acpect what “happened”.

i pretty much went without any real plan … i knew that there would be a bunch of cool gear to see, so no worries on that side.

so i went straight in for a first “overview-round” … and after about 5 minutes i ran into Ted form RED (you can say by accident) with a RED EPIC in plain sight. well that was nice.

… so i not only shot some random stuff with my 550D  i also had the chance to hold this thing in my hands … pretty awesome…
well it was the small config. like a big DSLR ;) not out yet & i couldn’t (i was not able to) really record something to a CF-Card (wich will be relaced by a SSD Module / slot… but man it was a great feeling …if u ask me it was a nice weight.. not to light not too heavy… soon other people noticed the RED EPIC. i followed “EPIC” and shot some stuff not much cuz i was too curious how this thing worked and stuff … but that is what i “glued” together in FCP last night … with a lil color work done with magic Bullet Looks:

more cinec coverage soon (review & more film clips…) stay tuned!

science, drums + movement

3 Sep

well this is a short lil trailer about an scientific project / program we support. its a “division” of science of sport from / on our university
this time we shot only with XH-A1 during an puplic event its all about movement and all kind of drums …
Edit was done in FCP … as well as the text stuff …some lil AE stuff (logo)
we spend some time in Magic Bullet Looks for the Color Garde (sorry folks no time for the new Coloriste II yet …)
a lil bit of sound mix … we wanted that trailer almost too much compressor sound (for now)

enjoy ;)

watch it in 720p HD: http://www.vimeo.com/14655281

i used these vimeo sttings

Sure Target 2 Test

16 Jan

at first: this started as an “Sure Target 2” test …

…well long story short, cuz it’s kinda late back here ;)
i had to play with the new Sure Target2 plugin
and i missed the last two FollowFridays on twitter
and i also have to say i was kinda inspired by Video Copilot (plugin&cool motion graphics) and Tomasso Roberto (@TRStudios by his special Video-FF’s)

so i “took the opportunity” to make a special FF-Trailer with all the good film fellows on twitter…maybe i forgot one or two – sorry for that.

i also used VideoCopilot “Pro Scores” and some “handmade” transition-sounds

and here we go: (maybe not the best picture/music sync, but time was not my friend here …;)

UPDATED:

Render out in AE took about / around 4 hours (maybe caused by the particle system)

sound was mixed in LogicPro with the Ozone3 master-plugin for “bunch&power”, some lil “corrections” (vignette, soft-edge, flares and so on…)  with MBL in FCP. (render-time around 30min)

AE Project & Master is 720p ProResHQ for vimeo exported as h264
using QuicktimeX -> save as HD720p (h264, 5Mbit/s)

this is the new version with a bit more “effects” :

FF: @videocopilot @TRStudios @cristinavaldivi @jonconnorfilms @PhilipBloom @saracollaton @behindthecut @MF_Films @wiegaertner @Catchin_badguys @lj_director @AmyPruett @alexbentzien @iGert @zacuto_sue @jayfriesen @VisualEdgeChris @Dr0id @BenjEckstein @mobiledivide @rondawson @Zacuto @alisterrobbie @editblog @filmbynumbers @kevinshahinian @AmyPruett @EditorJules @avidscreencast @alexm13 @jstunzi @officialavatar @grischatheissen @DeFrees ... oh and i almost missed @LittleMexiGwen & @jag35

UPDATE:

i did some render-time-tests …  i rendered without the CC Particle World and got about 30 minutes less render time.

i did a 2nd test with more Sure Target 2 effect amount and motion blur on text & particle system …  rendered a bit longer than the first one … but not much

so in the end it’s all about how much text layers you’ve got and how many of plugin-options you use (the amount off wiggle and so on doesn’t count that much)

Corporate Film

just a new vimeo channel … updates soon !

how the hell i got into HDDSLR’s ?!

23 Dec

i was just finishing my Philip Bloom blog-post-”adulation” … as i reconsidered: “actually …how the hell i got into video dslr’s ?!”
… well it was October 2009, i just got on vimeo & twitter and in kinda coincidence i got a hint on a webside called canonfilmmakers

this was my fist peek / notice on the 7D:

this is Jon Connor holding his (at this time) new Canon 7D – package in his hand(s)…
this is literally the fist impression i got on Jon & the 7D … fist thought … besides “boy, he has to shave” ;-)  …“why is he so excited ?”

…well i read his “Canon 7D: My First Impressions” and as he is always surrounded by cristina valdivieso i ended up – a few days later or so – on the vimeo page Canon 7D Field Test:

my comment on that: “stunning !!! a stills cam !!!”
… well i heard of some video-shooting going on with still-cameras… just hadn’t seen footage till this point in time (at least not that i was aware of)

so after that in invested some research time and at some point i got to Philip Bloom …
and there you go …

since that i had some serious discussions with my co-workers/co-founders and our DP and local filmmakers … about to use a canon-dslr for some of our next projects (as i mentioned before) and certainly i watched a lot of cool Video-DSLR stuff since then …

so i got excited too ;)

so now (after x-mas) i’ll have to find a rental-house to do some actual test-shootings with our DP … to see who this works for us and how this can fit into the budgets … and so on.
now i guess i have to thank cristina, jon and philip for opening my mind a bit ;)
so … thanks a lot guys!

some final thoughts, tho’:
in the end actually it’s not that important what camera we use … i still like the footage that comes out of the XH-A1, which we use all the time lately. it is the story/concept/idea you have / want to tell … it is the right voice … a great music / sound…the talent of the DP “behind” the camera … the whole package -  so to say … that matters the most

… but i also have to say again: the footage you can get out of this DSLR’s is really great !

you want to shoot Video with a DSLR ?…

22 Dec

… you have to watch this: Philip Bloom - a well experienced filmmaker – did some astonishing work / tests with the canon video-DSLR’s and did some serious blogging about it…
this is just mind-blowing. we’ll have quite “some” corporate film and viral stuff coming up in 2010 and we definitely considering using V-DSLR’s

philip and his stuff helped us quite a lot making this decision …
just to see and read how this works is great … so check this:

Canon 5DmkII and Canon 7D on Skywalker Ranch

philip’s blog-post about that

Low-light-testing of a pre-production Canon 1DMKIV in Prague
