Just today there was a lil conversation on twitter about what monitor to use / to trust for color grading.
Well in the fist place you could say… go and get an expensive Panasonic or Sony broadcast screen for around 5000-8000 bucks … well… if you have the money
But you still have to calibrate them
Just to get this clear i don’t speak about stuff you should do if you are working for broadcast (like “real” TV shows) or / and cinema projects… if so … YOU BETTER GET A EXPENSIVE THING!
But for corporate stuff on DVD or the “Internets” or a lil short-film (u name it) you can get away with a cheaper” solution: go and get a nice LCD for around 300-500 bucks (and maybe an Matrox MXO2 box or Blackmagic video card or something like that which has an option to calibrate).
I don’t want to go too deep in which brand you should get & why … and so on ( maybe Sony BRAVIA or Panasonic LCD TVs or Computer LCDs like HP, Dell or Formac is a good place to start
In the end its more like an experience thing … you have to know your screen (how other great stuff looks on it … for example i watch stuff i love – like TopGear or HOUSE or great Movies – on my Sony LCD TV) so now i know my screen…and it always good to have some sort of scopes (even the FCP scopes & levels are ok) and to somehow calibrate your screen.

so… that’s it … the easy way …i guess … i could go much deeper into that matter and there are some other opinions out that out in the world (i think & hope ) but that’s my way / my thoughts about that and it’s working for me and the clients.
oh and just a lil example how cool a TV show could look if you invest some time in color grading regardless which screen monitor you use
