Progressive Footage

Just a quick hint:

During our latest “all Progressive footage” project, shot with XH-A1 & 550D i noticed an curiosity in FinalCutPro that i did totally forgot about … so i had to remind myself … well, and so i remind you as well (thx to Mark Thompson on twitter for asking me about that matter thereby reminding me to remind you 🙂

Sometimes FCP doesn’t recognizes Progressive footage … especially if you shot on HDV tapes … sometimes even DSLR Footage). Meaning even if you put it in a Progressive timeline FCP wants to de-interlace the footage so in the end you get “jittery” results and your master could end up as an “interlaced” clip (kind of … almost …)

The trick is to check EVERYTIME if your settings are right … and if not, change it by hand … by yourself … you will get a better picture 😉

Two areas you have to check in FCP: in your Browser there is a column “Field Dominance” most likely  towards the end … it has to be set to “NON”:

And of course your Timeline settings as well … make sure NON FIELD DOMINANCE is selected.

BTW: did not recognizes that “FCP-progessive-issue” 550D / T2i footage coming via the E1 log&transfer plugin
